Self-care tips for children and young people

Four innovative self-care help sheets have been created to help empower local children and young people to manage their long-term conditions better.

NHS West Cheshire Clinical Commissioning Group commissioned Chester Voluntary Action (CVA) to work with local children and young people on the project, which focused on the management of long-term conditions including asthma, diabetes, epilepsy and mental ill-health.

The help sheets highlight tips to help children and young people stay well, triggers, what to do if the condition flares up and include links to local support.

As part of the co-production process CVA liaised with a wide range of professionals in local health, education and voluntary sector organisations.

A workshop was delivered involving young people with mental ill-health and a one-to-one interview was conducted with a 16-year-old boy who was recently diagnosed with diabetes.

An online questionnaire secured a strong response and mini-surveys were conducted via social media platforms Facebook and Twitter.
