Thumbs-up for Smile for a Mile!
Primary school pupils who have been trailblazing the West Cheshire Way’s Smile for a Mile initiative have put pen to paper to explain the many ways in which they benefit.
Horn’s Mill Primary School in Helsby recently held an official opening of their new all-weather track, which pupils can use to Smile for a Mile all year round!
In preparation for the event, Team Six, who were featured on BBC’s One Show in March 2016, wrote: “We really enjoy the Daily Mile – or Smile for a Mile as it is now known – and believe it is an important part of our day.
“When we first heard about the Daily Mile we were told that a school in Stirling had started it off and it was on its way to Cheshire. Active Cheshire had spoken to Mrs Wyatt to see if our school would like to take part.
“We were then told that our class had been chosen to start it off, which we were really proud of. Eventually the whole school would be doing it. We were looking forward to it but never knew it would be such a huge hit and that we would later have some great experiences like being on the One Show and many more!
“Smile for a Mile gives us a chance to improve our fitness levels at our own pace and also gives us time to socialise with our friends and teachers for a few minutes. Once we have finished our mile and achieved our goal, each and every child feels ready to learn.
“In this 15 minutes of activity, you should feel no pressure at all – all you need to do is try your best. It is not a competition, so we don’t worry about anyone else. We definitely feel it has improved our fitness levels and our concentration levels during class time. We look forward to this short ‘brain break’ and find that it does really help us.
“When we heard about being on the One Show we were very excited and couldn’t wait. When the day arrived we talked about keeping fit and healthy and watched a clip of St Ninian’s, the school in Stirling, doing the Daily Mile.
“Duncan, from Active Cheshire, supported us all the way and when the One Show Crew arrived we were so excited. They filmed us in our class and some of us were interviewed. It was very hard not to look at the cameras all the time! We really enjoyed the day and were very happy and proud when we saw our class on The One Show!
“Recently, we have been very lucky to have a new path installed on our field which we now use. We felt very excited when we saw it being built. We love running on the track and if we get the choice between the playground and the track, we always choose the track!
“It is a bigger, more open space where we can run more easily. This means we can challenge ourselves more and feel our fitness improving. The surface on the path is smoother and safer too. It doesn’t hurt as much if we fall over… a few of us have tested it!
“There is more space and we can spread out more, we have less people and objects to dodge when we are running, so we love using it. We also really enjoy being able to use the field whatever the weather!
“We really do want to thank all the people who have supported our school in being able to have a track. We know lots of people have really helped us, and our school wouldn’t have been able to get us a track without this help.”
