"Think Pharmacy" if you suffer a minor ailment this winter

The Chair of NHS West Cheshire Clinical Commissioning Group is urging people to “Think Pharmacy” if they suffer a minor ailment this winter.

Pharmacists are expert healthcare professionals who can provide specialist advice for a wide range of health conditions – and you don’t need to book an appointment to see them.

Dr Huw Charles-Jones said: “It’s important to seek the advice of your local pharmacist at the first sign of illness. Pharmacists can explain the normal duration of minor ailments and offer guidance on symptom relief. They are also best-placed to advise on the best ‘over the counter’ medicines to stock up on to help you and your family get through winter.

“It’s also important that people who are eligible for the free flu jab make sure they are protected and that those who take prescription medication order enough supplies to get them through the festive period.

“Taking simple steps like this can help to free up GP time to treat patients with more serious conditions. As always, if you think your illness may need more urgent attention, call NHS 111.”

Tariq Al Dulayymi, Pharmacist Manager at Swettenham Chemists in Blacon, Chester, said: “My message to the public is: ‘if you are feeling under the weather and are in any doubt, don’t be shy to ask’. We are open on weekdays and at weekends and have a consultation room for people who prefer more privacy.”

For those in need of a routine GP appointment outside of normal hours over Christmas and New Year, more than 130 hours of additional appointments are on offer across Chester, Ellesmere Port and Tarporley from December 23 to January 2.

GP Extended Hours will also be on offer in Malpas on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve and both Neston and Malpas on December 29. Call 0300 123 7740 and choose Option 3 to book an appointment.

Don’t forget – a number of GP practices in West Cheshire also offer the eConsult online triage tool on their practice websites. eConsult enables registered patients to access advice and treatment without having to visit their doctor.

For those in need of urgent medical assistance, the GP Out of Hours service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It can be accessed by calling NHS 111.
