Will the GP practice be open this Christmas and New Year?

People in Cheshire are advised to be prepared as GP practice and pharmacy opening times may vary over the Christmas period. Like most public services, GP practices and pharmacies have different opening times over the Christmas and New Year period.

Some surgeries in Cheshire are operating a GP Extended Access service which means a range of appointments will be available on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day in Cheshire.

As always, it is better to check directly with your local GP practice or pharmacy about their opening hours ahead of the Christmas and New Year season in case you do need assistance.

Dr Teresa Strefford, Executive Clinical Director at the NHS Cheshire Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) said:

“Christmas is approaching quickly, and I’d like to stress the importance of being aware of your local GP practice opening hours over this time.

“If you do need an appointment and you’re not sure if your practice is open you can call your practice as normal. If it’s closed, you’ll hear a recorded message advising you about how to access appointments out of hours or over the holiday season.

“I would encourage people that take medication regularly, to ensure that they have enough supplies to last the Christmas period. You need to make sure you request your medication in good time as practices need 2-3 working days to turn requests around.

“All GP surgeries offer repeat prescription services. This may be as an online request, or simply by filling out a form at the practice to request your prescription, saving both yours and the doctors time and also freeing up appointments for those in need.”

Anna Drinkwater, a Practice Pharmacist, said:

“For minor illnesses, such as colds, coughs and sore throats, it is best to see your local pharmacist who can offer you advice and over the counter remedies. Pharmacists will be happy to assist you there and then, with a free consultation.

“You can see Christmas pharmacy opening times in your area on your local CCG website.”

The opening times can be found here.
